In this work, we systematically study the two-body strong decay of these observed $\rho/\rho_3$ states. The phenomenological analysis shows that $\rho(1450)$, $\rho(1900)$ and $\rho(2150)$ can be radial excitations of $\rho(770)$ while $\rho(2000)$ and $\rho(2270)$ are the first and the second radial excitations of $\rho(1700)$ in the $^3D_1$ $\rho$ meson family. In addition, three $\rho_3(1690)$, $\rho(1990)$ and $\rho(2250)$ states can be categorized into the $^3D_3$ $\rho_3$ meson family. The study presented in this work also gives abundant information of the decay behavior of these discussed $\rho/\rho_3$ states, which can be tested in future experiments.
